Best steakhouses in Singapore: Where to go top-grade beef cuts

Daddy Dearest

share the story

A good steak is the meal of a champion, and who else but our fathers are the true champions of our lives? Steaks are harbingers of celebration and makin’ merry; and for your old man, a proper mighty slab of rare to well-done goodness could be the perfect Father’s Day treat to honour and appreciate all the years of (painstaking) fathering he has provided. Don’t stress about what gift to give him (if your dad can afford better and more expensive versions of any of your gift ideas, we relate). Haven’t you heard? Food is the way to a man’s heart. Show your dad some love by taking him to one of these steakhouses this Father’s Day.

Ruth’s Chris Steak House

Ruth’s Chris is a big, high-end chain with more than 150 restaurants around the world, but that doesn’t make it any less deserving to be on this best-of list. As you’d expect of a classic steakhouse, it has nine cuts on the menu — a filet, a NY Strip, a T-Bone, a porterhouse for two, and three ribeye options — all of which are custom-aged USDA Prime beef (supposedly the top 2 to 3 percent of cattle), perfectly seared and served sizzling on the 500-degree plate. Sides are textbook — creamed spinach, French fries, mash, lobster mac & cheese, fire-roasted corn — but still good, and there are plenty of decent non-steak options here (the crab cakes and barbecued shrimp are brilliant) if you want to diversify your table. In case you need another reason to be here with Dad this Father’s Day, Ruth’s Chris has collaborated with — surprise, surprisesuit maker Brooks Brothers for a four-course set dinner throughout the month of June, where there’ll be glorious steaks (obvs), and gifts from both brands thrown in. Also, Brooks Brothers have recently launched their Made-to-Measure program, so you can conveniently gift dad a perfectly fitted suit while he pops into the Paragon store to redeem gift from the dinner.

Luke’s Oyster Bar and Chop House

As might be guessed by its name, Luke’s specializes in sourcing and butchering the best meat to produce their specialty chop house classics. Even their table snacks, which sound deceivingly simple, are grand and decadent, as they ensure your meat cravings are satisfied right off the bat with their chop house steak sliders served with grilled onions and boursin. As juicy as those sound, however, we’re not about to settle for bite-sized meat chunks – not when their full chops are as lavish as they are. Luke’s Bone-in Tenderloin Au Poivre is a prime example of a 300-gram steak that will attack all your senses – complete with peppercorn crust and mustard cognac jus, customers who really want to just drown in pleasure can add grilled foie gras or a half lobster tail to this piece of heaven in your mouth. And, of course, they have a 400-gram USDA Prime Rib Eye steak that can be served either “naked” or in the “luau” style. Never fret that your vision will be assaulted by the sight of just red meat (although that does sound gorgeous) – if variegation is what you desire, they also have great seafood options including a lobster pot pie and jumbo lump crab cakes. With the personal guarantee of chef-owner Travis Masiero signed at the bottom of their menu, along with his new-American cooking expertise, we can expect an ultra-deluxe treat at Luke’s when we take our dads out for the hearty meal he deserves.

The Feather Blade

When The Feather Blade first announced their pop-up opening in Zui Hong Lou, we dreaded the day their temporary residence would end on the last weekend of April. Their steaks were divine — the specific cut they specialize in, the feather blade (otherwise known as the flat iron cut), is kept simple, buttery, and absolutely juicy, achieving classic crispy outer layers and tender, pink insides (if you go with the recommended medium-rare) that are served bite-sized with sprinkles of coarse salt for maximum enjoyment. A newer off-menu entry, the joint’s very own “Handshake Burger”, takes the same shoulder-blade cut of angus and sizzles it in its own fat on the pan to create a scrumptious patty. Imagine those excess oils dripping down only to get trapped by the brioche buns that hug the tender meat — no flavor goes to waste. Now here’s the good news: they have officially scored themselves permanent residency at 90 Club Street, and despite the recency of them entering our lives, they’ve served over 3000 diners, proving their immense popularity. In fact, ready yourselves for some competition at their abode, or take your dad out for an early dinner to beat the peak hour queue — after all, good things come to those who wait. To the steaks that were inspired by London‘s Flat Iron Steakhouse, we say (again): welcome to Singapore, and we’re glad you’ve decided to stay.

Morton’s The Steakhouse

Our dads aren’t the only ones being commemorated during this period. Morton’s The Steakhouse is celebrating its 21st birthday too — but that doesn’t mean your father has to share the spotlight, though. As a matter of fact, spirits are ever lifted at Morton’s with the aura of celebration fresh in the air, and their new spring menu extends this joy all the way to your plate. The limited-edition dishes they invented coincides with the flavors of this season, including an invigorating appetizer salad with the freshest plucks of fruit, arugula and candied pecans dressed with minted Greek yogurt to balance all that natural sweetness. The steaks? Pure indulgence, to say the least. Order the “Prime New York Steak Flight” and you’re in for a whole narrative about the range of culinary experiences different grades of steak can give you, with the Certified Black Angus All-Natural, USDA Prime and Snake River Farm Premium Wagyu Strip steaks all starring in this heavenly, educational feature film. They also have gluten– and soy-sensitive menus for those with dietary restrictions, so this place is really starting to look like they got it all.

CUT by Wolfgang Puck

One of the most esteemed steakhouses in Singapore, this 1-Michelin restaurant is nothing if not expert at serving steaks cooked to detailed perfection. And you can tell this immediately from just a glance at their menu, with their assorted top selections of USDA Prime cuts (Illinois corn-fed and aged 21 days) grilled over hard wood and charcoal, Australian Angus (grain-fed and aged 35 days), American Wagyu hailing from the Snake River Farms in Idaho, and Japanese Wagyu from the Miyazaki and Saga prefectures. Its elite location at Marina Bay Sands is but the cherry on top (or in this case, the red wine bordelaise and caramelized shallots on top), making for an all-rounded Father’s Day outing complete with both the best steaks and the best shopping experiences. Get your wallets ready, though — the ultimate day-off comes at a price.

Bedrock Bar & Grill

Bedrock Bar & Grill is a chef-centric hideaway made up of all their culinarians’ experiences, bringing glorious steaks to the table through years of their chefs’ exposures to the best that cows have to offer. From a deep understanding of the thriving steak scene, they recognized a demand to perfect the vogue Tomahawk — a long-bone ribeye steak fed for 400 days on grain — and perfect it they have. Their other signature is the Roasted Bone Marrow, served modestly (but still impressively) with crispy toast and a chopped parsley salad. This humble simplicity is a motto of theirs: quality meat sources gotten directly from the US, Ireland, Japan and Australia, are treated well and raised sustainably, then cooked with minimal ingredients to allow the beast‘s flavor to shine through exquisitely and undeniably.

WAKANUI Grill Dining Singapore

When a steakhouse only gets their meat from one specific country in the world, you know they do it for good reason. WAKANUI specializes in cooking beef explicitly produced in New Zealand, and here’s what’s exceptional about them: Angus grain-fed cattle are raised by the Pacific Ocean, thus getting dubbed “Ocean beef”, that gives the meat a unique, edgy saltiness when cooked that is rare among its kind. Yet another feature they own the bragging rights to is the technique of char-grilling their meat over Binchotan, a white Japanese charcoal, bringing about an unmistakable, striking smokiness to the finished product. They also have a solid Canterbury grass-fed fillet on hand, for those who want to forego the tougher, more intense ribeye. Evidently immersed in novelty, perhaps venturing out in exploration of what WAKANUI has to offer would make the perfect date with daddy dear this coming June.

The Halia

This quaint halal-certified eatery was actually built as a tribute to one of the world’s most popular ingredients — ginger (which in Malay is ‘halia’, hence the name). Although it is aptly located in the Ginger Garden of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, don’t be fooled by their gentle surroundings — they serve up a mean steak. With more traditional options like the tenderloin and striploin cuts of pure Angus beef, they also feature coveted servings of Australian full-blood Blackmore Wagyu beef with a marbling score of 9+. Some beautifully-marbled steak paired with piquant horseradish jus, and a walk around a UNESCO World Heritage Site after? Sounds like Father’s Day done right to us.
